The Association of Member Episcopal Conferences of Eastern Africa (AMECEA) consists of Eritrea, Ethiopia, Kenya, Malawi, South Sudan, Sudan, Tanzania, Uganda and Zambia (Somalia/Djibouti as affiliates). AMECEA dates back to July 1961, when the first meeting of bishops was held in Tanzania to establish what was known as the Inter-territorial Episcopal Meeting of the Bishops of Eastern Africa (ITEBEA). This meeting was attended by fifty-one (51) bishops from five countries -- Kenya, Tanganyika (now Tanzania), Uganda, Nyasaland (now Malawi), and Northern Rhodesia (now Zambia). It was in 1964, during the Second Vatican Council, that the bishops from Eastern Africa held a meeting to establish the Association of Member Episcopal Conferences in Eastern Africa (AMECEA) with the Secretariat in Nairobi. Since then the bishops of AMECEA have held many Plenary Assemblies as the highest body to reflect on common pastoral challenges and offer responses to the arising needs of the church in the region. In July, 2014, the bishops held its 18th Plenary Assembly in Malawi under the theme “Evangelization through True Conversion.”en_US
