The Attitude of the Tanzanians Towards Kiswahili as A Medium of Instruction in Primary Schools
(Tangaza University College, 2002-02) Imelda, Mushy
The researcher undertook this study for the purpose of looking at the attitude of Tanzanians towards Kiswahili as the medium of instruction in primary schools. The researcher assumed that the study would be of great help to the Tanzanians as they would be able to examine whether Kiswahili can be useful as language of instruction in primary schools in this twenty first century, since the education policy in the present world is after the use of universal languages, for example, English, for the purpose of effective communication as well as pursuing higher studies. The investigation was focused on the Tanzanian students in Nairobi. This included the institutes of, Tangaza College, C.U.E.A. and Apostles of Jesus Major Seminary who study Philosophy and Theology disciplines. Tangaza College and C.U.E.A include different departments such as Education, Social Ministry, Theology, and Spirituality. Hence the study came up with considerable solutions to the problem. However, the study also made use of literature review as to compare different ideas of different people concerning the use of Kiswahili as the language of instruction in primary schools in Tanzania. In this way, the study was able to see in detail whether there was a problem of using Kiswahili as a medium of instruction in primary schools. Also, the study used several instruments to collect data. This included questionnaires, interviews and observations. There were the presentation and discussions of the findings together with the conclusion and recommendations.
