Sexuality And Young Africans (A Study Case Of Elimo Santu Parish Kinshasa D. R.C)
(Tangaza University College, 2003) Musodja, Tchevibu Richard
In the last several years, more and more problems have been encountered on sexual matters. We are, at this particular time, experiencing so many sexual problems, be it for lay people or religious. This is a problem that affects millions of people in the world young and old alike. Elimo Santu parish in Kinshasa is not an exception. Morality on sexual matters has been degrading at a very high speed. Many young people are much and openly involved in sex without any guilty feeling. What should be the reason why so many young people are involved in sex? Although little research has been carried out in this field, there is a general agreement that several reasons can be put forward as why sex is becoming more open and free and at the first rank in Elimo santu Parish. As we continue our analyses we shall find out the reasons that bring about such kind of behavior. My year of pastoral experience in Elimo Santu parish exposed me to a great number of young people who are involved in sex. Therefore my interest in this area of study has been provoked by my encounter with the youth where I was myself a victim of so many proposals from young girls who daily saw in me a potential partner. It was and still it is for me a big moral and pastoral challenge for all of us who are called to be pastors of these youngsters. This is not particular in Kinshasa; it is a reality in most African cities. As I reflect more and more on the sexual issue in conjunction with what I encountered in Elimo Santu parish, it dawned to me that this is an area that I can venture and try to understand better in order to learn some concrete pastoral proposals so that the youth may be helped to comprehend values and the sacredness of sexuality.
