Models of Community Life as Tools for Witnessing to Solidarity with The Poor: A Case Study of The Daughters of Charity of St. Vincent De Paul, Eritrean Province
(Tangaza University College, 2017) Kidane, Medhin D. C.
Since the beginning, God revealed Himself with His loving plan of salvation to humanity in the three Persons of the Holy Trinity. The life of the Holy Trinity is the perfect model of life in common for all humanity in general and in particular, for those who live in community as a spiritual family of God. Jesus and His apostles lived as a community, and this continued into the birth of the Church, after Pentecost in the community of the first Christians. The religious, who assume community life imitate the model of the community life of the first Christians, through observing their own charisms. The Company of the Daughters of Charity live community life for the sake of the service of Christ in the poor. This implies putting emphasis on the authentic community life to form a spiritual family in which God dwells and takes the lead as the Father of the community. This is an essential factor for witnessing to solidarity among the people they serve; for the Daughters of Charity, service of the poor is an expression of the love of God. This paper aims at rekindling and restoring awareness about the necessity of living true fraternal life in community, which makes visible the love of God to others; humanity, especially for those whom society rejects and marginalizes. The study examines and discerns in depth values lived by the sisters in order to re-appreciate and re-live them and identify the challenges of fraternal life in order to sensitize and motivate members of the community to overcome the challenges and work together in building up a desirable community life. The investigation uses the descriptive design and analysis. In order to achieve the purpose of the study, a mixed research design, involving qualitative and quantitative approaches is used. The study uses the Community Cohesion approach for analyzing the community life of the Daughters of Charity in the Province of Eritrea. The literature review presents in detail the understanding of the Church, the Company of the Daughters of Charity and other scholarly works, of the necessity of living authentic religious community life to witness to the love of God. The study uses the stratified and random sampling design for the selection of participants in the study. The sample includes sisters in authority and other members of communities in other types of services, including Seminary Sisters. Data is gathered through questionnaires and interview guides from the field. For data presentation, tables, pie charts, frequencies and percentages are used. For the data analysis of the qualitative findings, SPSS is used, and quantitative findings are arranged in the thematic form, and it is interpreted according to each theme in relation to the objective of the study. The findings of the data provide some insights into authentic community life in view of a boosted service of the poor. At the end, the research proposes some possible suggestions, which could build up the fraternal life of communities in view of the mission of charitable service to the needy.

Pastoral Challenges in Marriage and Family Life: A Case Study of Parenting in Holy Cross Catholic Parish in Dandora, Archdiocese of Nairobi-Kenya
(Tangaza University College/Duquesne University, 2017) Koroma, Emmanuel Batholomew
The concept of marriage is very important and a concern of the society. For the society to continue to exist, its members have to marry and procreate, and this marry can be only between a matured man and a woman. Marriage between a man and a woman has Divine Origin. It was ordained by God that a man and a woman must come together in marriage to bring forth children. This is clearly captured in the bible that God is the Author of marriage and family, and He instituted it from the beginning of creation. In this account, God created everything including Adam, the first man on earth. However, there was no one like Adam, as a result of this God created Eve, Adam‟s wife as help mate. It is worth noting that God‟s observation that it was not good for Adam to stay alone led Him to the creation of his helper, Eve. She was the suitable companion to Adam because from Adam‟s own self, God created Eve. Adam‟s exclamation at the creation of Eve clearly shows the sexual attraction between men and women. (Cf. Gen. 2:18; 22-24) This particular Biblical passage refers to marriage and it means that it was instituted my God. Marriage ought to bring about together both the husband and the wife in love and with the primary aim of procreation. In this regard, the Council Fathers put it that: “Married love is an eminently human love because it is an affection between two persons; it can enrich the sentiments of the Spirit and their physical expression with the unique dignity and ennoble them as a special elements and sign of the friendship proper to marriage.” (GS, 49) Even though the institution of marriage is of Divine Origin, currently marriage and family life is under siege due to the fact that there are so many pastoral challenges in which this institution is face with like infidelity, parenting, alcoholism, separation, divorce and remarry among others. In this light, the Church cannot be silence seeing her children under going such challenges in their marriages. This is why I have set out to examine the causes of one of the above challenges, specifically parenting in order to give a pastoral recommendations and suggestions for families, pastors and pastoral agents in the Holy Cross parish Dandora which will help them in their marriage vocation and pastoral ministry. In the theological studies in Tangaza, the pastoral agent was exposed to courses which discuss marriage and family life such as: Moral Theology, Pastoral Theology, Social Doctrine of the Church, Sacramentology IV: Matrimony and Holy Orders, Catechetics, Sexuality, Marital and Family Morality, Canon Law: Marriage Processes, and Marriage and Family Pastoral Ministry. These made him also to be exposed to many Church documents dealing with marriage and family life like: On Human Life (Humanea Vitae), The Family in the Modern World (Familiaris Consortio), The Second Vatican Council, Compendium of the Social Doctrine of the Church (Part Two: Chapter Five, which is entitled: The Family, the Vital Cell of Society), and many others. All these have raised my interest and concern for marriage and family life.

Association between Perceived Family Support and Purpose in Life among Secondary School Students Living within Moshi Municipality in Tanzania
(Tangaza University College, 2017-07) Maleli, Josephat
The purpose of the study was to investigate the association between perceived family support and purpose in life among secondary school students living within Moshi Municipality in Tanzania. This study found that young people with proper perceived family support tend to have a well-defined purpose in life and this is often associated with higher levels of individual happiness. Correlation study design was used. The method used was quantitative. Using convenience sampling, four schools with different socioeconomic statuses were chosen to participate in the study. A sample of 378 students was randomly chosen from these schools. Data was collected using questionnaires which contained questions relating to demographic data and questions relating to the objectives of the study. Data for the objectives was collected using a perceived family support scale and a purpose in life scale. Data was analyzed as descriptive and inferential. Pearson‟s correlation and linear regression analysis was used to determine the relationship between perceived family support and purpose in life among the students. The study examined the efficacy of demographic details in enhancing purpose in life. The influence of demographic variables such as such as age, gender, family income, education background, religious background, residence and living situation on purpose in life was measured using one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA). In general, the results suggest that while family support perceptions are conceptually increases through the mediators the more purpose in life increases. The analysis revealed a seemingly strong perceived family support with more than 96% of the students claiming that their family really tries to help them. Similarly, more than 90% of the students attested to the fact that their personal existence is purposeful and meaningful; with 92% of the students stating that they have clear goals and aims in life. The study revealed that only gender had a significant association with purpose in life (F =5.77, p<.05). Female students showed significantly better purpose in life (M=86.2, SD=11.6) than male students (M=83.6, SD=12.8). Other demographic variables such as age, family status, religious background, residence and living situation showed insignificant influence on purpose in life. The hypothesis that there is significant relationship between demographic variables and purpose in life among secondary school students living in Moshi Municipality is thus partially supported in favour of gender. The study revealed that the students surveyed had high levels of perceived family support and purpose in life. Male students had insignificantly higher levels of perceived family support than their counterpart female students whereas female students have significantly higher level of purpose in life than male students. The study concludes that there is a significant association between perceived family support and purpose in life. This means that about 90% of variations/changes in purpose in life are explained by other factors that were not tested during the current study. The study recommends that future studies on the association between perceived family support and purpose in life should include other variables not considered in this study, such as culture and happiness.
