Abstract
M
ost compounds around Nairobi have a sign at
the gate indicating the security service they
use. One that always catches my attention is for “Ultimate
Security,
Limited”. It may be an excellent
company.
But I have often wondered, “If the security
they provide is ultimate, how can it be limited?”
These days everyone is concerned about safety.
A committee of Kenyan Vice-Chancellors is working on
policies to be recommended to all universities, to deal
with emergencies of every sort. The Kenyan government
has become increasingly involved in security issues in
higher education. We are told that they will soon assign a senior officer to every campus in Kenya. The Cabinet
Secretary for Education, Science and Technology, Dr.
Fred Matiang’I, has insisted that every tertiary institution
must collect “biometric data” on its students and staff,
partly in order to track those who have been radicalized,
and those who might be their victims. Although we doubt that “radicalization” is a serious problem at Tangaza, we
are now in discussions with other campuses in Karen
to see how we might share the cost of the equipment.
So please be patient with us as we begin to collect
your
fingerprints
and
contact
information
in
the
near
future!
The Deputy Principal Student Life’s Office will
be coordinating our security efforts. Soon we will also
be organizing fire and emergency training, and scheduling
safety drills in the different institutes. We are likewise
strongly urging students, staff and faculty to wear
their ID cards, so that we can know easily who is supposed
to be on the Tangaza
campus. We
already have CCTV cameras installed at various strategic points. We
have posted emergency numbers on the notice boards
so that you can quickly call for assistance should anything
happen. Tangaza
has askaris from Senaca International
at our front and back gates, and KK Security
is on call for emergency
responses. We
also have five trained guards on staff: Ambrose Marwa, Rashid
Weche, Urbanus Muli, Ilbee Joseph, Lydia Kerubo and
Nancy Nyaboke. Get to know them, and don’t forget
to thank them for the important service they provide!
