Relationship between Parenting Styles and Adolescent Academic Performance in Public Secondary Schools in Kasarani Sub-County, Nairobi

Abstract
This study sought to establish the relationship between parenting styles and adolescents’ academic performance in public secondary schools in Kasarani Sub-County, Nairobi. The study employed a correlation survey design. The study was guided by three research objectives: To investigate the most prevalent parenting style among parents of adolescents in public secondary schools in Kasarani Sub-County; To examine the level of academic performance among adolescents in public secondary schools in Kasarani Sub-County; To establish the relationship between parenting styles and adolescents’ academic performance in public secondary schools in Kasarani sub-county. Five public secondary schools in Kasarani Sub County were randomly sampled. The target population of the study comprised form three students, also randomly sampled. The sample size comprised 378 secondary school students drawn from public secondary schools in Kasarani Sub County. The study used a structured questionnaire with three sections to collect data from the selected sample of students. The quantitative data was analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics. Measures of central tendency including sums, mean, and standard deviation were applied in descriptive data analysis. The study adopted a correlational survey design in order to establish the nature of the relationship between parenting styles and adolescents’ academic performance. Furthermore, the null hypothesis was tested using Spearman’s rho correlation coefficient (r). The results of data analysis were presented using tables, graphs and figures. The results of the study indicated that the most prevalent perceived parenting style among parents of adolescents in the location of study is the authoritative parenting style. Furthermore, findings of the study showed that no statistically significant relationship exists between parenting styles and adolescent academic performance in Kasarani Sub- County. The implications of the study was that the poor academic performance among students could not be directly attributed to parenting styles experienced by the target population. Study results were used be used to generate recommendations to policy makers and educational stakeholders for appropriate interventions with the aim of averting the problem of poor academic performance among adolescents in public secondary schools in Kasarani Sub-County. It was recommended that workshops could be conducted for parents on the different parenting styles to create awareness and help them identify their styles. Teachers could engage students in academic tasks that promote academic excellence. Furthermore, policy makers should design educational policy conducive to higher academic achievement among adolescents in secondary schools.
