Polygamy being a type of marriage in the African culture is not compatible with the church law. Therefore understanding marriage as an institution in the church is very necessary. As we see polygamy is an obstacle to the reception of the sacraments Eucharist and Reconciliation, Confirmation and even Baptism for those who are not baptised. This essay is divided into three chapters. The first chapter attempts to present the background of the people in the Port of Victoria Parish, the polygamous marriage and its challenges. Chapter two brings out the Biblical foundation of marriage as started in the second account of creation. It also discusses polygamy in the Old Testament practised by some people. It points out the church stand on marriage. Chapter three focuses on addressing the challenges.en_US
