| dc.description.abstract | Easter is an event in the Church’s Liturgical year which celebrates the Paschal Mystery of Christ. It is the central liturgical season which, beginning with the Easter vigil, runs for fifty days until the evening prayer II of the Pentecost Sunday. Easter and its season is thus one great feast, the “great Sunday” which celebrates the redemptive act of God in the Person of Christ. Holy Saturday night is the mother of all vigils. The Exsultet acclaims that “This is the night when Christ broke the prison bars of death and rose victorious from the underworld” It is a victory over death, evil and darkness. The symbol of this victory is the Paschal Candle, the Lumen Christi, which drives away the darkness of the night (a symbol of sin and death). In the Easter vigil procession, the faithful salute and honour this light representing the Risen Christ, the Giver of Light. With great joy, the light is placed in the midst of the faithful to remind them of the constant presence of Christ among them, for He says: “...Lo! I am with you until the end of times” (Mt 28: 20). In the final analysis, the Exsultet turns out to be a hymn of praise of the Paschal Candle. It enumerates the praises of the powers and victory that this Lumen Christi has in conquering the darkness of the night. It holds that the Paschal Candle is a worthy offering to God, thanks to the mother bees. In this paper, I will explicitly explain about the history of the Kikuyu people and their understanding of bees (Kikuyu anthropological understanding of bees), then I will focus on the teachings from the church fathers, ecumenical councils and different encyclicals written pertaining the paschal candle and Easter season in general (theological reflections on the paschal candle as work of mother bees). In conclusion, I will relate the paschal candle and Kikuyu bee keepers and how it can help them in the growth of faith and have a deeper appreciation of the entire Easter season (how the paschal candle as work of mother bees can lead to growth of faith). | en_US |
