Abstract
Julius K. Nyerere’s philosophy of education is one of the most important and widely studied
theories of education. In this paper, the South Sudan educational system is enlightening and
understood in the light of the philosophy of Nyerere. So this approach is predicated on the
informed belief that there are social and historical commonalities between South Sudan and the
society of Nyerere’s philosophy. This paper therefore attempts to analyze Nyerere’s theory of
education with the view to render salient ideas that can contribute towards the formulation of
worthwhile theories of education in the context of South Sudan in the 21 century realities.
Therefore, accordingly, Nyerere’s views, namely, ‘education for the self-reliance’ and ‘education
for liberation’ are analyzed. As a result, it is evident that the current education in South Sudan is
insufficient in several ways. It is therefore, recommended that education in South Sudan should
embrace a multidimensional orientation that ensures the liberation of the individual, leading to the
achievement of self-reliance. The methodology that, we shall employ in this research proposal, is
that it is going to be analytical method which includes library materials like text books, both
primary, and secondary materials, internet sources, and article. One thing we should notes, is that
the education system of south Sudan trains students theory part in that students while in the field
are unable to acquire or else transform the knowledge acquired from schools to practical aspects
and it’s on the above view that this paper in light of Nyerere’s philosophy investigates this problem
of Euro-centric education that advocates for paper qualification than the practical aspects which
will be our emphasis to make the youth participate in the daily today activities since we have few
white collar jobs in the society so they should engage themselves in self-sustaining activities and
be creative.
