Abstract
In discussing on Aquinas‟ teaching on ultimate happiness, we will bring about the understanding on how this teaching is related to the gospel call for eternal happiness especially the Beatitudes. The project is all about trying to promote a living faith and faith in action among the believers as a way to attain ultimate happiness. The entire study has four chapters.
Chapter one gives us the general introduction, this includes the structure of the study; purpose of the study, the rationale of the study, the central question of investigation and the methodological consideration. Chapter two treats the teaching of Aquinas on ultimate happiness. We will explore how God is perceived in Aquinas‟ ethics and how Aquinas sees the unity between the ethical lives we live now and the life with God at the end of our life here on earth, which is the ultimate end. We will be interested more on the divine influence in one‟s moral life. In chapter three we deal with the beatitudes and the necessity of the Church in the pursuit of ultimate happiness. The CCC teaches us that the beatitudes confront us with the decisive choice concerning our using of earthly goods as we prepare ourselves for the final end, eternal life. (cf CCC, 1726). We will look at how the church helps us to enter into the commitments of faith; the church will be depicted as the community of belief and action. The church helps and calls us to pursue this journey to ultimate end with conviction, vigor through the help and encouragement we receive from the community of believers. In the last chapter, chapter four, we will treat the topic on suffering and ultimate happiness. We will also look on how we should teach or preach about ultimate happiness to people who are suffering and who seem not to be experiencing the love and goodness of God in their life situations.
