Abstract
The study aimed at finding out the influence of Video on youth of the
Kibera Slum.
The research also investigated how much knowledge young people have
about video/TV movies. Although youth know so much about the
influence of watching video/movies, the research findings have revealed
that individual knowledge does not stand on the same level.
The study also found out that video/TV movie watching has immense
influence on the youth. This impact plays a major role on the various
aspects of their lives be it psychological and physical areas of their human
development.
The study has brought to light, some attitudes, which both youth and
parents have towards video. While some individual youth and
parents/guardians encourage the watching of video, others deject it. The
study was able to seek recommendations from both youth and
parents/guardians. It was investigated that possible recommendations from
fellow youth and parents/guardians could be helpful to youth.
The research further looked into the types of video that the youth are fond
of watching. This quest generated different results, some of which were
confined to violence, spiritual, educative, recreational and entertaining.
These types of video equally serve as the reasons for the youth to very
much get acquainted with video.
Furthermore, there is so much spending of money and time involved, so
much so that it impedes youth's personal freedom and responsibility to
choose what is considered as legitimate and appropriate to Part of the investigation was, to find out at what age the youth begin to
pick interest in video or when they become viewers. From the responses
given, most youth become passive video recipients before they reach the
age of 15. It has been realized that it is either a close friend or a relative
such as parent/guardian, brother or sister that exposes the youth to Video
watching.
The researcher recommended that viewers, especially the youth and
parents, should establish a cautious moderation between values derived
from video and its infringement with other more essential human values
and necessities. The choices that the viewers make according to the
researcher's suggestions should be guided by five fundamental questions.
The viewer must ask him/herself what to watch, why to watch, which to
watch, when to watch, where to watch, and how to watch.
