Abstract
This study set out to investigate the effects of use of textbooks on the teaching and learning of
English language at the Highway Secondary School, Nairobi. The main research question
was: Are textbooks widely used at The Highway Secondary School? The subquestions were:
"what is the quality of English textbooks used at The Highway Secondary School?" "how are
the English Textbooks used at The Highway Secondary School?", "Do English textbooks
affect the teaching and learning of English at The Highway Secondary School?" Three
research instruments were used, namely: Questionnaires, Observation Guide and Interview
Guides for teachers of English and administrators. It was found that textbooks affect the
teaching and learning of English language at The Highway Secondary School to a large extent.
This was shown in the concerns that the students' teachers and administrators had about
textbooks. It was shown that the quality of textbooks was very important if maximum
teaching and learning is to take place.
This quality of paper used must be user friendly the language used must be at the level of the
learners, the spellings must be correct the type of exercises given and covers must be suitable
If these standards are not met, the students begin hating the textbooks. Therefore, the teaching
and learning of English Language is affected. It was evident that books are still needed at The
Highway Secondary School. It was recommended that all persons concerned should play their
role in streamlining the use of textbooks in order to have a better teaching and learning process
of the English language; these including teachers, parents, students, publishers and the
Government of Kenya.
