Abstract
In this study, I would like to bring into the attention some of the major challenges on polygamy facing the Christian community in Karungu Catholic Parish. Polygamy and polygyny are confusing terms but the former is a term referring to any plural union, with a focus on one husband many women as the centre of our interest. There are many pastoral issues surrounding this kind of cultural marriage. The understanding of polygamy will be of greater importance to understand the perspective of our mission in Africa today. The major objective is to find out how we can be of help to these people in their cultural set up. We need to show how much the church can be of help to them without falling the victims of syncretism. The demands of the mission are very important and need to be put into consideration on the basis of faith in Christ Jesus. How then do we move on with this missiological and pastoral problem? First and foremost, these people value their culture at the same time observe what the Church teaches the faithful on Gods commandments. Living the Christian life attracts most of them. They truly desire that they can really live it. These are some of the challenges the church has to overcome in mission for all the people in the world and mainly in Karungu Catholic Parish Homabay Diocese. The situation, in which these people find themselves in, is of greater concern. The culture of polygamy and the life of Christian has become difficult for these people to express their faith as demanded by the Church's teachings. There seems to be a rift between the Christian teaching and this cultural marriage. There might be temptations of living double lives, which is not really our point of concern according to this study. For us to move well towards our goal, we have to depend on the understanding of this culture, this will give us the clear background and therefore our stand point in this line of thought on culture, we need to further, see in details the historical background, the geographical location, influences, cultural aspect of it. the Biblical approaches, and the Ecclesial teaching in the later chapter of the project.
